OCH first in Region to use revolutionary knee replacement technology

Dr Philip Hurley, a member of Orthopaedics Sports Medicine Owensboro, and the region's most experienced knee replacement surgeon, began using this technology last fall when he begin his full time practice at Ohio County Hospital. iASSIST is an advanced surgical guidance system designed to improve the accuracy and alignment of total knee replacement. It consists of small, disposable electronic sensors which employ accelerometers and gyroscopes to provide accurate alignment information to the surgeon. Dr. Hurley is able to verify each surgical step in real time with this palm sized electronic display. The device is able to determine the precise mechanical axis of each person's leg. This allows him to implant the knee replacement in a more accurate alignment.

"Alignment in a knee replacement is just like the front end alignment of your vehicle. It has to be accurate in order to function properly," says Dr. Hurley. "This technology helps me to precisely align the knee replacement to each patient's unique anatomy, providing a personalized fit that is a truly tailored total knee replacement. It is a way to make a good procedure even better."

With this advanced technology and the Joint Camp Rehabilitation Program, The Orthopedic and Sports Medicine department at Ohio County Hospital offers a comprehensive approach to total joint procedure patient care.
